Commentary Concering Books The Traitor Baru Cormorant (The Masquerade #1)
Tomorrow, on the beach, Baru Cormorant will look up from the sand of her home and see red sails on the horizon. The Empire of Masks is coming, armed with coin and ink, doctrine and compass, soap and lies. They'll conquer Baru’s island, rewrite her culture, criminalize her customs, and dispose of one of her fathers. But Baru is patient. She'll swallow her hate, prove her talent, and join the Masquerade. She will learn the secrets of empire. She’ll be exactly what they need. And she'll claw her way high enough up the rungs of power to set her people free. In a final test of her loyalty, the Masquerade will send Baru to bring order to distant Aurdwynn, a snakepit of rebels, informants, and seditious dukes. Aurdwynn kills everyone who tries to rule it. To survive, Baru will need to untangle this land’s intricate web of treachery - and conceal her attraction to the dangerously fascinating Duchess Tain Hu. But Baru is a savant in games of power, as ruthless in her tactics as she is fixated on her goals. In the calculus of her schemes, all ledgers must be balanced, and the price of liberation paid in full.Rating Of Books The Traitor Baru Cormorant (The Masquerade #1)

A relentless tale of deceptions, betrayals, rebellion, gender identity, politics, with a royal accountant protagonistKevin Weis review at Fantasy Literature covers the themes and merits of this excellent book so eloquently that there isnt much more I can add, other than to say this book is fiercely intelligent, frequently brutal in the moral dilemmas that its central character Baru Cormorant faces, and the world it depicts is incredibly detailed and complicated, just like our own world. ItIf you're a fan of political intrigue & fierce female characters, this is a book for you!Baru Cormorant is an idealistic & intelligent woman, compelled from a young age to dominate the intricate games of power between reigning territories & save her precious island home & the unique culture that raised her.It can be quite difficult to find such a lovely balance of politics, characterization, plot twists, and imagination, but I think Seth Dickinson's debut is a beautiful blend of
Reread in April of 2019:I reread this book on audio in 2019. I enjoyed it more this time around but I still couldn't connect with the second half of the book that is mostly political intrigue. For some reason, I completely zone out during all the meetings that Baru has with the rebels. I talk about the reread some in my wrap-up video: https://youtu.be/Qe1prVghxVQIncreased rating from a 1 to a 2.Original Review:This book is a rollar coaster of a ride and not in a good way. 4.5 of 5 stars at The BiblioSanctum http://bibliosanctum.com/2015/10/20/b...A really odd sensation is coming over me right now. Ive just finished The Traitor Baru Cormorant and Im sitting down to write this review, struggling to find the right words to describe my journey with this book. It all started even before I picked up the novel, since Id been seeing so many of my fellow readers talk about it in the weeks leading up to its release, and quite frankly, a lot of the stuff I heard scared the
I'm going to have to make a new shelf for the growing number of economi-punk titles that have been coming out. I can't believe how many of them there are, or why I get drawn so hard and fast into these kinds of tales. I can easily list one economist-protagonist for each of my fingers, and no one is more surprised than me that I'm digging it.I'm digging it hard. Can we have math geniuses make great heroes? Why yes, of course you can. SF has a very long history of doing just that. But how about
Probably one of the best book I have ever read. My favorite book so far of the year. This book is so different from any type of fantasy that I have ever read. Its like nothing out there, its so unique. Good job on a well done debut that will divide people/readers as much as Thomas Convent or The Magicians. Its like if all the Grimdark authors started to add something different to all there works, but still is realistic and considered to be Grimdark. Basically in my opinion, this book is Grimdark
(Audiobook 4.5 stars) The Traitor Baru Cormorant is unlike any book I have ever read before.I have read plenty of tales of revenge, empire building, totalitarianism, deceit and subterfuge. I have read fantasies that contain no magic or dragons. I have never read a book with all these elements where our main character is an accountant whos main weapons are guile, inflation, market manipulation and management of logistics.Wait! Dont stop reading! I know the idea of a controlled sub-prime mortgage
