Victus
Wow, that was actually quite nice. I think Spanish authors are pretty strong with their historical fiction and this didn't disappoint either. I was surprised to know (at the end of the book) that the main character is actually a real historical figure. His story was so brilliantly written, witty and sometimes even rude that I enjoyed him a lot. After 400 pages story was too much about battles and the war but Martí was such a character that it was a pleasure to read about him even if it got a bit

Impressive, and quite compelling most of the time. Some narrative tricks were funny at first, but fell flat after a few times and became annoying instead. I do like the protagonist not being a hero and him readily admitting that. Some parts dragged a bit, especially when history and/or tactics were explained (by the protagonist himself, who, as a master of military engineering, is dictating his life story). Overall enjoyable, but I have to admit I was kind of glad to finish it.

A bit disappointed in this book. I was looking forward to it a lot but I just couldn't make it to the end. I skipped the last 70 pages. I learned a lot about that particular time and place in history (which complemented, quite by accident a show, Two Catalonias, I watched on Netflix)but the narrative was way too wordy, meandering and long. I didn't find any of the main protagonists compelling enough to really get involved with. Bummer.
It could have been good. a book this long (700 pages) has to have something to keep you interested. As i got to pages 160-170, getting more and more boring, i thought to myself - i am not doing this to me. Still 500 boring pages to go, when my shelves contain so many good books that wait to be read.I thought it will be some great historical adventure book in the sense of Cathedral at the sea from Ildefonso Falcones. not a chance. This one presents stuff in a very didactic and pedantic and boring

Rendition Concering Books Victus
Specify Epithetical Books Victus

Victus - conquered, defeated. Upon reading the subtitle - it is about the defeat of the great city of Barcelona by the french bourbons. And maybe another subtitle should be added - how Marti Zuviria - the talented and ambitious engineer - was defeated by the war. Was he defeated by losing everyone he ever loved and esteemed? By losing his house and his properties? Or maybe his vanity and selfishness have been forever defeated by the experiences he lives during the war. He, the Prince of Cowards,Wow, that was actually quite nice. I think Spanish authors are pretty strong with their historical fiction and this didn't disappoint either.
