I found myself at a severe disadvantage by not having read the earlier book in the fantasy series. No information is presented in the first quarter, which is as far as I've read, as to who the people are, what has happened and why they are doing what they are doing. I like the concepts which seem close to Narnia's The Silver Chair - a land of fierce giants, an underground world of tunnels and a small unattractive race.
